Deal To Delhi
As I’m sure many of you will relate with, moving home can be one of the most stressful life events we go through. Although it can be a very exciting time, the energy, time and money it takes to pack up your life as you know it and move to a new place can be so draining and exhausting.
This past month, I’ve been packing down my home, office and warehouse in Deal, and getting ready to move to India for six months. I’d like to say I’m quite efficient at moving having done it several times throughout my life, but this time was one of the most challenging. Here are a few things it’s brought up for me which I thought I’d share, in case you’re also moving any time soon!
We need to let go of old ‘stuff’
I don’t think we truly realise how much ‘stuff’ we have until we need to pack up and move it all! Moving to India has really reinforced to me how we need to live more lightly and not have so many material possessions.
Sell off large heavy furniture
Before I really started shutting down my home here, I sold off all the heavy furniture I didn’t love anymore. It gave me real joy seeing people come and take the things I no longer wanted or needed, and the money went towards my India expense pot.
If you’re moving abroad, pack lightly
Packing to see me through two seasons and six months in India was one of the hardest tasks. I have already sent one parcel full of sweats and woolly socks ahead of me to save on luggage. With my suitcase I’m taking with me, I’ve packed as if I was going for 10 days, because I know I will recycle the outfits many times. I’ve also got a separate smaller case for contact lenses, bags, shoes, toiletries, notebooks, and electrical gadgets. This keeps my main case lighter and also provides me with a smaller case for when I’m out there!
Ask for help
This was a big breakthrough for me. I’m a single person and I HAD to ask for help with the move; I had to be fragile and vulnerable which I found very humbling. Asking those closest to you for help is such an important thing, it allows you to connect and for others to feel involved; a big lesson for me.
Plan ahead
My last piece of advice is to plan ahead as much as you can, and to give yourself more time than you think. Most tasks take WAY longer than you initially think, and you should also leave some time to rest as the long days can be very physical and tiring.
I head off on my travels today and will keep you posted on my journey.
